How to play:
It is best played with 4 players in two teams. Points are awarded to the opposing team if you touch the board during a rally, if the ball touches the ground, if you hold the ball in your hands, if the ball touches the board more than once in a row, if your team plays the ball more than three times, if you touch the ball more than once before passing it to your teammate, or if you interfere with the opposing team's possession of the ball. A match goes to 21 points. Teams must win by at least 2 points.
But how exactly does this new Pickleball/Spikeball XXL outdoor game for children and adults work? After the board and court have been set up, two teams of four players face off. The players of one team stand on the same side of the board, facing the opposing players, with the court between the teams. Once the ball is in play, there are no "sides", so players can move freely around the board throughout the rally. However, players may not block, blind, obstruct, or interfere with the opponent while in possession of the ball. A team begins with the player on the right serving first. After each successful point, the player swaps positions with their teammate. The leading team serves until they lose possession of the ball.
The ball must be served diagonally and received by the opposing team. Before serving, the ball must be tossed into the air (it must no longer touch the hands). From the air, the serve is then made with one hand. For a successful serve, the ball must hit the black area of the board (the "black ball"). If the ball hits the red area, it is considered a fault, and the serve may be repeated once. If this attempt also misses, the opposing team receives a point. If the ball hits the red edge or goes out of bounds, it is considered a foul, and the opposing team takes their turn.
As in regular volleyball, teams may touch the ball a maximum of three times together before it must be returned to the opposing team over the board, unless they hit a "red ball", the red surface of the board. The ball may be played by pushing, volleys/sets, smashes, or other body parts, as long as it is not lifted or carried. It all sounds much more complicated in theory than it is, so it's best to try it out right away!
